Baltic states don’t get Russia’s electricity – Level 2

Tags :

Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania now get electricity from the European system instead of Russia.

They used Russian electricity for many years, but now they are connected to Finland, Sweden, and Poland. This change is important because it helps them be safer and more independent. On Saturday, they turned off the last power lines to Russia and Belarus. The next day, they had a ceremony with leaders from Europe, including Ursula von der Leyen.

In 2024, the three countries told Russia and Belarus about their plans so there wouldn’t be any problems. Relations with Russia worsened in 2022 because of the war in Ukraine. The Baltic countries want to be part of Europe and not depend on Russia anymore.

Difficult words: independent (not needing help or control from others), ceremony (a special event to celebrate something), worsen (to make or become worse).
